“Customers need to know that their [electric] rates are currently being capped by prior regulatory agreement and that, beginning in 2011, they will be exposed to market forces.” -- PA PUC
When the rate caps expire, electricity prices will have to go up around 40% just to make up for inflation and bring electricity back to 1996 rates. Add to that the huge increases we've already seen in energy prices (300 - 400% in the last 7 years) and who knows what we will see.
Free Things You Can Do Now! (instant payback!)
Turn down water heater thermostat to 120ºF
Set heat to 68ºF in winter, lower at night (programmable thermostats do this automatically)
Use energy-saving settings on all appliances
Air-dry clothes and dishes
Wash only full loads of clothes and dishes
Repair leaky faucets and toilets
Take short showers – use a timer
