‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through our place,
My solar energy systems kept a smile on my face.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
But, for me, St. Nicholas had already been there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds ,
The environment protected for their lives ahead.
For ma in her ’kerchief, and I in PJ’s
Get gifts from the sun, on all sunny days.
To fight rising prices that cause such a clatter
We’ve taken these steps so our budget won’t shatter.
Away to the window whose shades are drawn at night,
While on sunny days they’re open to let in heat and light.
(This is passive solar energy, easy, I say,
Free heat for us on each sunny day.)
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A red Prius, backseat filled with reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
He stepped out of the car and with a voice loud and clean,
He pronounced, “Aha! It is good to be green!”
“Now carpool, now compost, reuse and recycle,
On air-sealing, on solar and ride a bicycle.”
He looked up toward the house and he said with a flair,
“I need to be careful -- they have solar panels up there!”
With hardly an effort and hardly a sound,
He leapt to the roof in one single bound.
He inspected the panels that gleamed in the night.
“With free heat and electricity, this guy’s doing alright!”
Then he slid down the chimney quick as a wink
And picked up the milk I’d left him to drink.
Seeing me he laid his finger aside of his nose,
And said, “I hope this whole solar thing grows.
“It makes sense for the environment and bank account, too
I sure wish there were more people like you!”
I told that costs of systems had come down quite a lot
And there were government incentives to sweeten the pot.
Giving a nod, he skipped the chimney and went to the door.
“Oy, I’m not that young anymore!”
He jumped into his hybrid and drove out of sight.
“Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!”
