SOLAR ELECTRIC - SRECs
SRECs provide an opportunity for ongoing, future income generation.
Separate and additional to the opportunity to create your own electricity and save money through lower electric bills, Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) provide another ongoing opportunity for providing returns on your solar investment.
Your solar electric (PV) system generates SRECs as it generates electricity.
1 SREC = 1,000 kWh of solar electricity or 1 MWh of solar electricity.
So a system with 10 kW solar capacity will generate approximately 12 SRECs per year for the rest of its useful life. (Source: SRECTrade.com) The utility companies in each state are required to generate a certain percentage of their electricity each year from renewable sources. One way they do this, is by purchasing SRECs from people with small PV systems. The price for SRECs is set by the market principles of supply and demand in each state, so it varies, but the sale of your SRECs provides another ongoing opportunity for income from your system. Currently, in PA, the SREC price is relatively low while in NJ, SREC prices have skyrocketed. As the market changes and evolves, your opportunity to make additional money from your solar energy system will as well.
